How to translate your CV from Vietnamese to English in 3 steps
- 1
Upload your Vietnamese CV
Your CV or sơ yếu lý lịch as PDF, DOC, DOCX or TXT (up to 10 MB and 5 pages). Made it in Canva? Download it as a PDF; photos of a CV are not accepted. The original layout does not matter: the content is read and laid out again.
- 2
Choose English and a design
From this page, English is already selected as the CV language. Pick one of 25+ templates. The photo is optional: leave it out and the CV has none. In the optional note you can ask for “American English” or “British English”.
- 3
Review, edit and download
Read the English version, edit any line, delete the personal details an English CV does not need, and download the PDF.
What gets translated and what stays the same
- Translated
- Career objective or summary, job titles, duties and achievements, skills, degrees and majors, courses, projects, volunteering and custom sections.
- Kept as is
- Your name, the names of companies, universities and schools, your email, phone, links, software names (Excel, SAP, Python) and certificate acronyms (IELTS, ACCA, PMP).
- Not summarised
- The tool is set up to keep every job, bullet point and date of the original. Still, compare the result with your CV before downloading.
- Checked by you
- The tool translates what your CV contains. Delete your date of birth, gender, hometown (quê quán), marital status or CCCD number in the editor before applying in the US or the UK, and add your university's official English name if it is missing.
Vietnamese CV vs. US resume vs. UK CV
An English CV changes more than the language: personal details and format change too.
| Vietnam | United States (resume) | United Kingdom (CV) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Called | CV or sơ yếu lý lịch | Resume | CV |
| Length | 1–2 pages | 1 page; 2 for long careers | Up to 2 pages |
| Photo | Common | No | No |
| Personal details | Date of birth, gender, hometown, marital status | Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn | Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn |
| Phone | 0912 345 678 | +84 912 345 678 (drop the leading 0) | +84 912 345 678 (drop the leading 0) |
| Dates | 09/2021 – nay | Sep 2021 – Present | Sep 2021 – Present |
| Profile | Mục tiêu nghề nghiệp (career objective) | 2–3 line summary | 3–4 line personal statement |
| References | Often listed with phone numbers | Left out; asked for later | Left out or given on request |
General conventions, not rules — if the job ad asks for something else, follow the ad. Foreign companies hiring in Vietnam sometimes still accept a photo. Write months as words: 03/04/2025 means March 4 in the US.
How to write Vietnamese degrees and graduation ranks in English
Degree names and graduation ranks are mistranslated most often. Use your university's official English name (on its website or your diploma) and explain the qualification.
- Bằng tốt nghiệp THPT
- High school diploma. Usually left out once you have a higher degree.
- Trung cấp
- Vocational diploma, with the field and length: “Vocational Diploma in Accounting (2 years)”.
- Cao đẳng
- Associate degree with the length: “Associate degree in Nursing (3-year college program)”. Avoid a bare “College degree” — in the US it suggests a bachelor's.
- Cử nhân / Kỹ sư
- Bachelor's degree with the major: “Bachelor of Business Administration, Foreign Trade University”. A 5-year Kỹ sư: “Engineer's degree in Civil Engineering (5 years)”.
- Thạc sĩ / Tiến sĩ
- Master's degree (Master of Science, MBA…) and PhD.
- Xếp loại tốt nghiệp
- Xuất sắc = Excellent, Giỏi = Very good, Khá = Good, always with the GPA and scale: “GPA 3.6/4.0” or “8.2/10”. Do not convert it to a US GPA yourself; for an official equivalence use WES (US, Canada) or UK ENIC (UK).
Literal translations that give a Vietnamese CV away
These word-for-word translations most often reveal a machine-translated CV.
| Vietnamese | Literal mistake | On an English CV |
|---|---|---|
| Mục tiêu nghề nghiệp | Career target | Career objective / Summary |
| Nhân viên kinh doanh | Business staff | Sales Executive |
| Nhân viên văn phòng | Office staff | Administrative Assistant |
| Trưởng phòng | Head of room | Department Manager / Head of Sales |
| Thực tập sinh | Practice student | Intern |
| Hệ chính quy | Regular system | Full-time program |
| Tốt nghiệp loại Giỏi | Graduated with good type | Graduated with Very good classification |
| Từ 2021 đến nay | 2021 – Now | 2021 – Present |
| Chịu được áp lực cao | Can bear high pressure | Works well under tight deadlines |

Tailored to one job ad
With “Tailor CV to Vacancy” you upload your CV and an English job ad, and the CV is written around what that employer asks for.
Translate an English CV into Vietnamese
Moving back to Vietnam or applying to a Vietnamese employer? It works the other way round too: upload your English CV and choose Vietnamese as the CV language.
- Personal details
- Many Vietnamese employers still expect a photo and date of birth. If the job ad asks for them, add the photo and write the extra details in the optional note.
- Dates and degrees
- Check that dates read “09/2021 – nay” and that degrees use the local names Cử nhân, Kỹ sư or Thạc sĩ, with your graduation rank.

Vietnamese to English CV translation: FAQ
How do I translate my CV from Vietnamese to English?
Upload your Vietnamese CV, choose English as the CV language and a design, and the English version is ready in about a minute. Review it, remove personal details US and UK employers do not expect, and download the PDF.
Is it free?
Creating your first CV and seeing the full result is free with an account, no card needed. The clean PDF without watermark is part of the One-Time Package (one payment; price depends on your country) or the Pro Plan.
Is it better than Google Translate?
A general translator converts the document as it is and can break the layout. MyEasyCV writes the content of your CV in English and lays it out again in a clean, editable template. Either way, read the result before you send it.
Is this a certified translation?
No. MyEasyCV writes your CV in English for job applications. Diplomas, transcripts and documents for visas, study abroad or USCIS need a certified translation (dịch thuật công chứng).
How should I write a Vietnamese name on an English resume?
Your name is kept as written in your CV. Use your passport spelling; many people drop the diacritics on an English CV: “Nguyen Van An”. Capitalise the family name (“NGUYEN Van An”) or write “An Nguyen” so readers know your surname, and use the same form on your email and LinkedIn.
Should an English resume have a photo?
For the US and the UK, usually not. In MyEasyCV the photo is optional; without one, your English CV has none.
American or British English?
Use the one of the country you apply in: American for the US (organize, center), British for the UK and Australia (organise, centre). Ask for it in the optional note.
How do I write “Giỏi” or “Khá” on an English CV?
Give the rank in English with the GPA and its scale: “Bachelor of Economics, Very good classification (GPA 3.4/4.0)”. Readers abroad know GPAs better than rank names.
Can I translate my CV from English to Vietnamese?
Yes. Upload your English CV, choose Vietnamese as the CV language and a design, and edit the result before you download it. The same rule applies: the first CV is free to create and preview with an account; the clean PDF without watermark is paid.
Your experience is the same in any language. Make sure it reads well in English.
