Engineer Resume Template & CV Example (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical)
A strong engineering resume (called a CV in the UK and most of the world) proves three things fast: your engineering discipline and license, the projects you have delivered, and results with numbers such as budget, scale, time and cost saved. Below is a complete example of a civil engineer CV in a single-column, ATS-friendly design, what to write in each section, bullet points you can adapt for any engineering field and the keywords employers search for.

How to write an engineering resume, section by section
Engineering managers look for the discipline, the type and size of projects and the tools you use. Put these in the first lines and prove them with numbers.
1. Header
Your name (with a professional license such as PE or CEng if you hold one), the role you want, for example Civil Engineer · Site & Structural Design, phone, e-mail, city and a LinkedIn or portfolio link. A photo, date of birth and marital status are not needed in the US, UK or Canada.
2. Professional summary
Three or four lines: discipline, years of experience, the kind of projects (buildings, roads, machines, power systems), the scale you work at, your key tools and one result with a number. Match it to the job ad.
3. Engineering experience
Newest job first: title, company, city and dates, then 3–5 bullet points. For each project show what you designed or managed, its size or budget, the standards you worked to and the result: time saved, cost reduced, defects or downtime cut.
4. Projects
Graduates and engineers changing field can add a short list of key projects: a capstone, a competition team or a notable design, with your role and the outcome. Experienced engineers usually keep projects inside the job bullets.
5. Skills
Group the software and methods from the job ad: CAD and modelling (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks), analysis tools, calculation and simulation, codes and standards, project tools. Add only what you can discuss in an interview.
6. Education
Your engineering degree, university and graduation year, plus a thesis or capstone if it is relevant. Recent graduates can add strong grades and relevant courses.
7. License and certifications
Professional license or chartered status (for example PE, EIT/FE, CEng) with the state or country, safety training, quality or project management certificates. Write the exact official names, and mention a license in the header too.
Engineer resume bullet points you can adapt
ⓘ The numbers below are illustrative sample data. Use your own real figures, even small ones.
Design and analysis
- Designed the foundations and site drainage for a 4-storey, 6,500 m² school building
- Ran load and settlement calculations and checked 120 drawings against the building code
- Redesigned a steel connection detail that cut fabrication time by 15%
Project delivery
- Managed design packages for 6 projects at the same time, all delivered on schedule
- Prepared quantity take-offs and cost estimates for tenders worth up to 12 million in total
- Answered 85 contractor requests for information within an average of 3 working days
Quality and safety
- Led weekly site inspections; zero lost-time incidents on 2 sites over 18 months
- Introduced a design-review checklist that reduced drawing revisions by 25%
- Wrote method statements and inspection test plans for concrete works
Teamwork and stakeholders
- Coordinated architects, MEP engineers and contractors in weekly design meetings
- Mentored 3 graduate engineers through their first year
- Presented design options and costs to clients and the city permit office
License, software and certifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, civil
- AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, ETABS, Excel for calculations
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction safety training
Engineering skills and ATS keywords
Hard skills
- AutoCAD and Civil 3D
- Revit or BIM modelling
- SolidWorks or other 3D CAD
- Structural or mechanical calculations
- Finite element analysis (FEA)
- Codes and standards compliance
- Technical drawings and specifications
- Cost estimating and quantity take-off
- Project scheduling
- MATLAB, Python or Excel for engineering
Soft skills
- Problem solving
- Attention to detail
- Clear technical communication
- Teamwork across disciplines
- Time management
- Client focus
Keywords to include for ATS
Engineering firms, manufacturers and public bodies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) that search resumes for words from the job ad. Use the exact words from the ad where they are true for you, for example:
- engineering design
- AutoCAD
- technical drawings
- project management
- building codes
- quality control
- site inspection
- cost estimation
- feasibility study
- health and safety
- PE license
- continuous improvement
Variants: civil, mechanical, electrical and graduate engineers
Civil / structural engineer
Lead with the project types (buildings, roads, bridges, water), their size, the design codes you work to, site supervision and the permits you prepare.
Mechanical engineer
Show the products or systems you design, CAD and simulation tools, prototyping and testing, manufacturing processes and results such as weight, cost or energy saved.
Electrical engineer
Name the voltage levels and systems (power distribution, controls, electronics), design and simulation tools, commissioning, safety standards and the reliability you improved.
Graduate or engineering student
Put your degree, capstone or thesis, internships and engineering competitions first. Describe each project like a job: your role, the tools and a measurable result.
Common engineer resume mistakes
- Listing every software you ever opened instead of the tools in the job ad
- Describing duties (“responsible for design”) without project size, budget or results
- Too much jargon and abbreviations that a recruiter or ATS does not recognise
- Missing the license, chartered status or its state or country
- Confidential client data or drawings you are not allowed to share
- Two-column designs, tables and text in images that ATS software cannot read
Engineer resume FAQ
What is the best format for an engineering resume?
Reverse-chronological in a clean single-column design: header, summary, engineering experience with project results, skills grouped by type, education, license and certifications. It is easy for managers to scan and for ATS software to read.
How long should an engineer resume be?
One page for graduates and engineers with a few years of experience, up to two pages for senior engineers with many projects. Keep only the projects that match the job.
Should I list projects separately?
Graduates should, because projects show what they can do. Experienced engineers usually put projects inside each job, with a short line on scope, their role and the result.
Which skills should an engineer put on a resume?
The skills in the job ad: CAD and modelling tools, analysis and simulation, codes and standards, project and quality tools, plus problem solving and teamwork proven in your bullet points.
Is an engineer CV the same as an engineer resume?
For engineering jobs, yes: the US and Canada say resume, the UK, Ireland, India and most other countries say CV. An academic CV for research positions is longer and lists publications.
Can I use this engineer template for free?
Yes. You can open the design in the MyEasyCV builder and create your CV for free with an account. Download options are explained on the pricing page.
Can I translate my engineering CV for a job abroad?
Yes. Upload your current CV, choose the language and MyEasyCV rewrites it in that language in an ATS-friendly design, ready for you to check and edit, including the technical terms.
