General conventions, not rules: if the job ad asks for something else, follow the ad. 03/04/2025 reads as March 4 in the US but 3 April in the UK, so write months as words. From Finland, the country code is +358.
How to write Swedish qualifications in English
Degree names are what gets mistranslated most. Keep the institution's name (or use its official English name, such as Stockholm University) and explain the qualification in English.
- Gymnasieexamen
- “Upper secondary school diploma”, ideally with the programme: “Upper secondary school diploma, Natural Science Programme”. In the US, “high school diploma” is understood too.
- YH-examen
- “Higher vocational education diploma (Yrkeshögskolan)” with the length of the programme. It is not an academic degree, so do not call it a bachelor's degree.
- Högskoleexamen (120 hp)
- “Higher Education Diploma (2 years)”. A högskola is not a high school but a higher education institution: a “university” or “university college”.
- Kandidatexamen (180 hp)
- “Bachelor's degree” with the main field: “Bachelor's degree in Economics (180 ECTS credits), Lunds universitet”.
- Magisterexamen / masterexamen
- Both are a “Master's degree”; give the credits so the difference shows: magister 60 hp, master 120 hp.
- Civilingenjörsexamen (300 hp)
- “Master of Science in Engineering”. You can keep “civilingenjör” in brackets.
- Högskolepoäng and betyg
- 1 hp equals 1 ECTS credit: write “180 ECTS credits”. Do not convert grades to a GPA yourself; give the scale, for example “Grades: A–F” or “Pass with Distinction (VG)”. For official recognition, use WES (US and Canada) or UK ENIC (UK).

Should an English CV have a photo?
For the US and the UK, usually not. In MyEasyCV the photo is an optional field: without one, your English CV has none.
What is a högskola in English?
Not a high school. A högskola is a higher education institution, usually called a “university college” in English; a universitet is a “university”.
How do högskolepoäng convert to ECTS?
One to one: 1 hp is 1 ECTS credit, and a year of full-time study is 60 hp. So a kandidatexamen is “180 ECTS credits”.
British or American English?
Use the one of the country you apply in: American for the US (organize, center), British for the UK and often for the rest of Europe (organise, centre). Ask for it in the optional note.
Does it work for a CV from Swedish-speaking Finland?
Yes, the CV just needs to be in Swedish. Write your phone number with +358, and explain Finnish qualifications in plain English rather than translating their names word for word.
