What a German CV usually looks like
German employers expect a short, tabular CV (tabellarischer Lebenslauf). These are the conventions most applicants follow — the job ad always comes first, because companies and industries differ.
- Length and order
- One to two pages. Experience in reverse chronological order, newest first.
- Photo
- Common, but not required: under the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) an employer cannot demand one. Many international companies prefer CVs without a photo.
- Personal details
- Name, address, phone and email. Date of birth, nationality and marital status are optional today; mention your work permit (for example an EU passport or an EU Blue Card) if it answers the employer's first question.
- Dates
- Month and year for every position, for example "03/2021 – heute". Explain gaps of more than a few months in one line.
- German level
- State it honestly on the CEFR scale (A1–C2), for example "Deutsch – B2". Recruiters look for it first.
- Degrees and certificates
- Describe foreign degrees so a German reader understands them; the anabin database of the KMK shows how many foreign qualifications are rated. Certificates and references (Zeugnisse) go in separate attachments, not inside the CV.
- Signature
- Place, date and signature at the end are traditional, but no longer expected in online applications.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a certified translation?
No. MyEasyCV writes your CV in German for job applications, where employers expect a normal CV. Diplomas, certificates and documents for authorities need a certified translation by a sworn translator (vereidigter Übersetzer).
Can I translate my CV from English to German?
Yes — and from any other language. Upload the CV, choose "Deutsch (German)" as the CV language, and the whole CV is generated in German.
Do I need a photo on a German CV?
No. A photo is still common in Germany, but employers cannot require it. In MyEasyCV the photo is optional — add one or leave it out.
Should I apply in German if the job ad is in English?
Apply in the language of the job ad. A German ad gets a German CV; an English ad at an international company can get an English CV. Both versions can live in your MyEasyCV dashboard.
