How to translate your CV from Chinese to English in 3 steps
- 1
Upload your Chinese CV
Your 简历 as PDF, DOC, DOCX or TXT (up to 10 MB and 5 pages). Made it in Canva or on a resume site? Export it as a PDF; photos or screenshots of a CV are not accepted. The original layout does not matter: the content is read and laid out again.
- 2
Choose English and a design
From this page, English is already selected as the CV language. Pick one of 25+ templates. The photo is optional: leave it out and the CV has none. In the optional note you can ask for “American English” or “British English”, or give your pinyin name, e.g. “ZHANG Wei”.
- 3
Review, edit and download
Read the English version, edit any line, delete the personal details an English CV does not need, and download the PDF.
What gets translated and what stays the same
- Translated
- Self-evaluation or summary, job titles, duties and achievements, skills, degrees and majors, courses, projects, volunteering and custom sections.
- Not translated
- Your name, the names of companies, universities and schools, your email, phone, links, software names (Excel, SAP, Python) and certificate acronyms (CPA, ACCA, PMP).
- Not summarised
- The tool is set up to keep every job, bullet point and date of the original. Still, compare the result with your CV before downloading.
- Checked by you
- The tool translates what your CV contains, so delete your date of birth, hometown, ethnicity, political status, marital status and ID number before applying in the US or the UK. If your name, school or employer is still in Chinese characters, replace it with your passport pinyin and the official English name.
Chinese resume vs. US resume vs. UK CV
An English CV changes more than the language: personal details and format change too.
| Mainland China | United States (resume) | United Kingdom (CV) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Called | 简历 (jianli), 个人简历 | Resume | CV |
| Length | Usually 1 page, at most 2 | 1 page; 2 for long careers | Up to 2 pages |
| Photo | Common (ID-style photo) | No | No |
| Personal details | Age, gender, hometown, ethnicity, political status | Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn | Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn |
| Phone | 138 0013 8000 | +86 138 0013 8000 (with country code) | +86 138 0013 8000 (with country code) |
| Dates | 2021.03 – 至今 | Mar 2021 – Present | Mar 2021 – Present |
| Profile | 自我评价, often at the end | 2–3 line summary at the top | 3–4 line personal statement |
| Address | Largest to smallest unit | Smallest to largest; city is enough | Smallest to largest; city is enough |
General conventions, not rules — if the job ad asks for something else, follow the ad. Foreign companies hiring in China sometimes still accept a photo. Write months as words: 03/04/2025 means March 4 in the US and 3 April in the UK.
How to write Chinese degrees and GPA in English
Degree names are mistranslated most often. Use your university's official English name (on its website or degree certificate) and explain the qualification.
- 高中 (high school)
- High school diploma. Usually left out once you have a degree; leave out your gaokao score too.
- 中专 / 技校
- Secondary vocational diploma with the field: “Secondary Vocational Diploma in Accounting”.
- 大专 (zhuanke)
- Associate degree with the length: “Associate degree in Nursing (3-year program)”. Avoid a bare “College degree” — in the US it suggests a bachelor's.
- 本科 (benke)
- Bachelor's degree with the degree type and major: “Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science and Technology”.
- 硕士 / 博士
- Master's degree (academic: Master of Science; professional: MBA, MEng) and PhD.
- 985 / 211 / Double First-Class
- Most employers abroad do not know these labels. If you mention them, explain: “Project 985 university (China's national top-tier group)”.
- GPA and class rank
- Copy your transcript: “GPA 3.6/4.0” or “Average score 86/100”, plus “Top 10% of class” if true. Do not convert it to a US GPA yourself; for an official equivalence use WES (US, Canada) or UK ENIC (UK).
Literal translations that give a Chinese CV away
These word-for-word translations most often reveal a machine-translated CV.
| Chinese | Literal mistake | On an English CV |
|---|---|---|
| 自我评价 | Self-evaluation | Summary / Profile |
| 求职意向 | Job intention | Objective / Target role |
| 实习 | Practice | Internship |
| 三好学生 | Three Good Student | Merit Student Award |
| 英语六级 | English Level 6 | CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) |
| 精通 Excel | Master Excel | Advanced Excel |
| 负责…… | Be responsible for… | Led / Managed / Built… |
| 至今 | Till now / Until now | Present |
| 北京大学 | Beijing University | Peking University |

Chinese to English CV translation: FAQ
How do I translate my CV from Chinese to English?
Upload your Chinese CV, choose English as the CV language and a design, and the English version is ready in about a minute. Review it, remove personal details US and UK employers do not expect, and download the PDF.
Is it free?
Your first CV is free to create and preview with an account, no card needed. The clean PDF without watermark is part of the One-Time Package (one payment; price depends on your country) or the Pro Plan.
Is it better than Google Translate or DeepL?
A general translator converts the document as it is and can break the layout. MyEasyCV writes your CV's content in English in a clean, editable template. Either way, read the result before sending.
Is this a certified translation?
No. MyEasyCV writes your CV in English for job applications. Diplomas, transcripts and documents for visas, university admission or authorities need a certified translation.
How should I write my Chinese name?
Use the pinyin in your passport. Keep the Chinese order with the surname in capitals (“ZHANG Wei”) or use the Western order (“Wei Zhang”); add an English name only if you really use it: “Wei (David) Zhang”. Give it in the optional note or fix it in the editor.
Should an English resume have a photo?
For the US and the UK, usually not. In MyEasyCV the photo is optional; without one, your English CV has none.
American or British English?
Match the country: American for the US (organize, center), British for the UK (organise, centre). Ask for it in the optional note.
Should I list CET-4 or CET-6?
Yes, but spell it out with the score, e.g. “CET-6 (College English Test Band 6): 560”, because employers abroad may not know it. If you have IELTS or TOEFL, list that first.
Can I translate my CV from English to Chinese?
Yes. Upload your English CV, choose Chinese as the CV language and a design, and edit the result before you download it. The same rule applies: the first CV is free to create and preview; the clean PDF without watermark is paid.
Your experience is the same in any language. Make sure it reads well in English.
