CV conventions in the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands
English-language CVs in Europe are short and factual. These are the conventions most recruiters expect — follow the job ad if it asks for something else.
- Length
- Two pages is normal in the UK and Ireland; one to two pages in the Netherlands. Newest experience first.
- Photo
- Leave it out for the UK and Ireland. In the Netherlands a photo is optional; international employers do not expect one.
- Personal details
- Name, phone, email, city and a LinkedIn link. For UK jobs leave out date of birth, marital status and religion — employers avoid them because of the Equality Act 2010.
- Personal statement
- UK and Irish CVs usually open with three or four lines on who you are, what you offer and the role you want.
- Right to work
- If you already have the right to work — a visa, settled status, or an EU passport for Ireland and the Netherlands — say so in one line. It answers the first question a recruiter has about a foreign CV.
- Qualifications
- Explain foreign degrees in plain English. UK ENIC (run by Ecctis, formerly UK NARIC) issues statements of comparability in the UK; Nuffic evaluates foreign diplomas in the Netherlands.
- Spelling
- Use British spelling for the UK and Ireland (organised, CV). "Résumé" and American spelling belong to the US.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a certified translation?
No. MyEasyCV writes your CV in English for job applications, where employers expect a normal CV. Diplomas, certificates and documents for authorities need a certified translation by a professional translator.
Can I translate my CV from Russian, Turkish or Arabic to English?
Yes — from any language. Upload the CV, choose English as the CV language, and the whole CV is generated in English.
CV or résumé — which do I need?
For the UK, Ireland and most of Europe it is a CV. A résumé is the shorter US and Canadian format. MyEasyCV produces a CV; you can shorten it in the editor if a job asks for one page.
Should I remove my photo and date of birth?
For the UK and Ireland, yes. The photo in MyEasyCV is optional — just do not add one. If your original CV has a date of birth or marital status, delete that line in the editor before you download.
Do Dutch employers accept English CVs?
Many do, especially international companies and jobs advertised in English. If the vacancy is in Dutch, send a Dutch CV — MyEasyCV can generate one too ("Dutch" in the language list).
