How to translate your CV from French to English in 3 steps
- 1
Upload your French CV
PDF, DOC, DOCX or TXT, up to 10 MB and 5 pages. Made it in Canva? Download it as a PDF. The original layout does not matter — the content is read and the CV is laid out again.
- 2
Choose English and a design
Coming from this page, English is already selected as the CV language. Pick one of 25+ templates. The photo is optional — leave it out and the CV has none. In the optional note you can ask for "American English" or "British English".
- 3
Review, edit and download
Read the English version, change any line in the editor and delete the personal details an English-language CV does not need. Then download the PDF.
What gets translated and what stays the same
- Translated
- Your accroche or profile, job titles, missions and achievements, skills, degree titles and fields, training, projects, volunteering and any custom section.
- Kept as is
- Your name, the names of companies, universities and écoles, your email, phone, links, software names (Excel, SAP, Python) and certification acronyms.
- Not summarised
- The tool is set up to keep every job, bullet point and date of the original, without summarising. Still, compare the result with your CV before you download it.
- Checked by you
- The tool translates what your CV contains. If it lists your age, date of birth, marital status or nationality, delete them in the editor before applying in the US or the UK.
French CV vs. US resume vs. UK CV
An English CV is not only a different language — the personal details and format change too. These are the most common conventions.
| France | United States (resume) | United Kingdom (CV) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Called | CV | Resume | CV |
| Length | 1 page; 2 if experienced | 1 page; 2 for long careers | Up to 2 pages |
| Photo | Common, optional | No | No |
| Personal details | Age, driving licence, sometimes marital status | Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn | Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn |
| Phone | 06 12 34 56 78 | +33 6 12 34 56 78 | +33 6 12 34 56 78 |
| Dates | 09/2021 – aujourd'hui | Sep 2021 – Present | Sep 2021 – Present |
| Opening | Job title + short accroche | 2–3 line summary | 3–4 line personal statement |
| Interests | Common section | Usually left out | One line, if relevant |
These are general conventions, not rules — if the job ad asks for something else, follow the ad. Write months as words: 03/04/2025 is 3 April in France and March 4 in the US.
How to write French degrees in English
"Bac+5" means nothing to most recruiters abroad. Keep the school name in French and explain the level in English.
- Baccalauréat
- High school diploma (French Baccalauréat). Not a "Bachelor" — that is a university degree.
- BTS / BUT
- "Two-year higher technical diploma (BTS) in …"; for the BUT: "Bachelor's-level technology degree (BUT, 3 years)".
- Licence (Bac+3)
- Bachelor's degree, with the field: "Bachelor's degree in Economics, Université de Lyon".
- Master (Bac+5)
- Master's degree. Name the specialisation instead of writing "Bac+5".
- Diplôme d'ingénieur / Grande École
- "Master's-level engineering degree (Diplôme d'ingénieur), École …"; for a business school: "Master in Management". Keep the school's name.
- Classes préparatoires
- "Two-year intensive preparatory programme for the Grandes Écoles entrance exams".
- Mention and marks out of 20
- Do not convert them to a GPA yourself. Write "Average grade: 14.5/20 (mention Bien)", or get an official equivalence from a credential evaluation service such as WES (US and Canada) or UK ENIC (UK).
French false friends on an English CV
These literal translations are the ones that most often give away a machine-translated French CV.
| French | Literal mistake | On an English CV |
|---|---|---|
| Formation | Formation | Education / Training |
| Stage | Stage | Internship |
| Licence | Licence | Bachelor's degree |
| Actuellement | Actually | Currently / Present |
| Assister à une conférence | Assist a conference | Attend a conference |
| Compétences | Competences | Skills |
| Responsable de | Responsible of | Led / Managed / Responsible for |
| Éventuellement | Eventually | Possibly / If needed |
| Anglais : courant | Current English | English: C1 (CEFR) / French: Native |

French to English CV translation: FAQ
How do I translate my CV from French to English?
Upload your French CV to MyEasyCV, choose English as the CV language and a design, and the English version is ready in about a minute. Review it, remove personal details US and UK employers do not expect, and download the PDF.
Is it free?
Creating your first CV and seeing the full English result is free with an account, no card needed. The clean PDF without watermark is part of the One-Time Package (one payment; the price depends on your country) or the Pro Plan.
Is it better than Google Translate or DeepL?
A general translator converts the document as it is and can break the layout. MyEasyCV takes the content of your CV, writes it in English and lays it out again in a clean template you can edit. Either way, read the result before you send it.
Is this a certified translation?
No. MyEasyCV writes your CV in English for job applications, where employers expect a normal CV. Diplomas and documents for visas or authorities need a sworn or certified translator.
What is "Bac+5" in English?
There is no direct English term. Write the actual degree — for example "Master's degree in Finance" — with the school's name; recruiters abroad understand the degree, not the "Bac+" level.
Should an English resume have a photo?
For the US and the UK, usually not. In MyEasyCV the photo is optional — if you do not add one, your English CV has none.
American or British English?
Use the one of the country you apply in: American for the US (organize, center), British for the UK (organise, centre). Ask for it in the optional note and check it in the editor.
Will my école and company names be translated?
No. Names of universities, écoles and companies stay in French, so employers can look them up; the degree title and field are translated.
Can I translate my CV from English to French?
Yes. Upload your English CV, choose French as the CV language and a design. The same rule applies: the first CV is free to create and preview with an account; the clean PDF without watermark is paid.
Your experience is the same in any language. Make sure it reads well in English.
