How to translate your CV from Norwegian to English in 3 steps
- 1
Upload your Norwegian CV
PDF, DOC, DOCX or TXT, up to 10 MB and 5 pages. Made it in Canva? Download it as a PDF. The original layout does not matter — the content is read and laid out again.
- 2
Choose English and a design
English is preselected when you come from this page. Pick one of 25+ templates; the photo is optional — leave it out and the CV has none. In the optional note you can ask for “British English” or “American English”.
- 3
Review, edit and download
Read the English version, change any line in the editor and delete the personal details an English CV does not need. Then download the PDF for your application.
What gets translated and what stays the same
- Translated
- Your profile or summary, job titles, duties and achievements, skills, degree titles and fields, courses, projects, volunteering and any custom section.
- Kept as is
- Your name, company, university and school names, email, phone, links, software (Excel, SAP, Python) and certification acronyms. Æ, ø and å stay too — that is fine on an English CV.
- Not summarised
- The tool is set up to keep every job, bullet and date without summarising. Still, compare the result with your CV before downloading.
- Checked by you
- The tool translates what your CV contains. Date of birth, marital status, nationality or a personnummer are not removed automatically — delete them in the editor before applying in the US or the UK.
Norwegian CV vs. US resume vs. UK CV
In English, the personal details and format change too. These are the most common conventions.
| Norway | United States (resume) | United Kingdom (CV) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 1–2 pages | 1 page; 2 for long careers | Up to 2 pages |
| Photo | Common but optional | No | No |
| Personal details | Often date of birth, sometimes marital status | City, phone, email, LinkedIn | City, phone, email, LinkedIn |
| Phone | 912 34 567 | +47 912 34 567 (with country code) | +47 912 34 567 (with country code) |
| Dates | mars 2021 – d.d. | Mar 2021 – Present | Mar 2021 – Present |
| Profile | Short profile (optional) | 2–3 line summary | 3–4 line personal statement |
| References | Name and phone of 2–3 referees | Left out; asked for later | Left out or given on request |
| Attester | Often attached to the application | Rarely used | Rarely used; referees are contacted |
General conventions, not rules — if the job ad asks for something else, follow the ad. Write months as words: 03.04.2025 is 3 April in Norway but March 4 in the US. Some EU employers ask for a Europass CV, which is a separate format.
How to write Norwegian qualifications in English
Qualification names are what gets mistranslated most. Keep the school name (or use its official English name, such as University of Oslo) and explain the qualification.
- Videregående skole
- Upper secondary school, with the programme: “Upper secondary school, general studies (university preparatory)”. In the US, “high school diploma” is understood too.
- Generell studiekompetanse
- “Higher education entrance qualification” — worth listing if you have no degree.
- Fagbrev / svennebrev
- Trade certificate / journeyman's certificate, with the trade: “Trade certificate (fagbrev), Electrician”. Mesterbrev: “Master craftsman certificate”.
- Fagskole
- Tertiary vocational education, with field and length: “Vocational college diploma in Automation (2 years)”.
- Bachelorgrad
- Bachelor's degree, ideally with credits: “Bachelor's degree in Nursing (180 ECTS), OsloMet”.
- Mastergrad / ph.d. / older degrees
- Master's degree (120 ECTS) and PhD. Older degrees can stay with a short explanation: “Cand.philol. (former Norwegian degree, Master's level)”.
- Karakterer
- Do not convert to a GPA yourself. Give the scale: “Grade average: B (A–F scale)”, or “Average 4.8 (scale 1–6)” for upper secondary. For official recognition, use WES (US and Canada) or UK ENIC (UK).
False friends and common mistakes
These word-for-word translations most often give away a machine-translated Norwegian CV.
| Norwegian | Literal mistake | On an English CV |
|---|---|---|
| Aktuell | Actual | Current / relevant |
| Eventuelt | Eventually | If needed / possibly |
| Daglig leder | Daily leader | Managing Director / General Manager |
| Konsulent (public sector) | Consultant | Executive Officer / Adviser |
| Saksbehandler | Case handler | Case officer / Caseworker |
| Lærling | Learner | Apprentice |
| Fast stilling / vikariat | Fast position / vicariate | Permanent / temporary position |
| Karakter | Character | Grade |
| Førerkort klasse B | Driver card class B | Driving licence (Class B) |

Norwegian to English CV translation: FAQ
How do I translate my CV from Norwegian to English?
Upload your Norwegian CV, choose English as the CV language and a design, and the English version is ready in about a minute. Review it, remove personal details US and UK employers do not expect, and download the PDF.
Is it free?
Creating your first CV and seeing the full English result is free with an account, no card needed. The clean PDF without watermark is part of the One-Time Package (one payment; the price depends on your country) or the Pro Plan.
Is it better than Google Translate or DeepL?
A general translator converts the file as it is and can break the layout. MyEasyCV writes the content of your CV in English and lays it out again in an editable template. Either way, read the result before you send it.
Is this a certified translation?
No. MyEasyCV writes your CV in English for job applications. Diplomas (vitnemål) and documents for visas, recognition or other authorities need a state-authorised translator (statsautorisert translatør) or a certified translation.
Should I translate my attester?
Attester are separate documents, not part of the CV. Employers in the UK and US usually contact your referees instead, so list two or three referees — or write “References available on request” — and keep the attester ready in case someone asks.
Should an English CV have a photo?
For the US and the UK, usually not. In MyEasyCV the photo is optional — without one, your CV has none.
British or American English?
Use the one of the country you apply in: British for the UK and usually for Europe (organise, centre), American for the US (organize, center). Ask for it in the optional note.
Europass or a regular CV?
Europass is a separate EU format that some employers and schools ask for. Most employers in the UK and US expect a regular CV or resume. MyEasyCV makes a regular CV, not a Europass CV.
Can I translate my CV from English to Norwegian?
Yes. Upload your English CV, choose Norwegian as the CV language and a design. The same rule applies: the first CV is free to create and preview with an account; the clean PDF without watermark is paid.
Your experience is the same in any language. Make sure it reads well in English.
