How to translate your CV from Spanish to English in 3 steps
- 1
Upload your Spanish CV
Your currículum, CV or hoja de vida as PDF, DOC, DOCX or TXT (up to 10 MB and 5 pages). Made it in Canva? Download it as a PDF. The original layout does not matter — the content is read and the CV is laid out again.
- 2
Choose English and a design
Coming from this page, English is already selected as the CV language. Pick one of 25+ templates. The photo is optional — leave it out and the CV has none. In the optional note you can ask for "American English" or "British English".
- 3
Review, edit and download
Read the English version, change any line in the editor and delete the personal details an English-language CV does not need. Then download the PDF for your application.
What gets translated and what stays the same
- Translated
- Your profile or summary, job titles, duties and achievements, skills, degree titles and fields, courses, projects, volunteering and any custom section.
- Kept as is
- Your name, the names of companies, universities and schools, your email, phone, links, software names (Excel, SAP, Python) and certification acronyms.
- Not summarised
- The tool is set up to keep every job, bullet point and date of the original, without summarising. Still, compare the result with your CV before you download it.
- Checked by you
- The tool translates what your CV contains. If it lists your date of birth, marital status, DNI, cédula or nationality, delete them in the editor before applying in the US or the UK.
Spanish CV vs. US resume vs. UK CV
An English CV is not only a different language — the personal details and format change too. These are the most common conventions.
| Spain & Latin America | United States (resume) | United Kingdom (CV) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Called | Currículum, CV or hoja de vida | Resume | CV |
| Length | 1–2 pages | 1 page; 2 for long careers | Up to 2 pages |
| Photo | Common | No | No |
| Personal details | Date of birth, marital status, DNI or cédula | Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn | Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn |
| Phone | 612 345 678 | +34 612 345 678 (with country code) | +34 612 345 678 (with country code) |
| Dates | 03/2021 – actualidad | Mar 2021 – Present | Mar 2021 – Present |
| Profile | Optional | 2–3 line summary | 3–4 line personal statement |
| References | "Referencias disponibles" | Left out; asked for later | Left out or given on request |
These are general conventions, not rules — if the job ad asks for something else, follow the ad. Write months as words: 03/04/2025 means March 4 in the US and 3 April in Spain.
How to write Spanish and Latin American degrees in English
Degree names are what gets mistranslated most. Keep the university name in Spanish and explain the qualification in English.
- Bachillerato / Preparatoria
- High school diploma. Not "Bachelor" — that is a university degree.
- Grado / Licenciatura
- Bachelor's degree, with the field: "Bachelor's degree in Law (5-year Licenciatura), Universidad de Sevilla".
- Máster / Maestría
- Master's degree. If it is a máster propio (not an official degree), say so: "Postgraduate programme (Máster propio)".
- Doctorado
- PhD.
- FP / Técnico / Tecnólogo
- Give the level, field and length: "Higher Vocational Training in Web Development (2 years)", "Technologist in Software Development (3-year program, SENA)".
- Diplomado
- Diploma course or certificate program, with the hours: "Diploma course in Digital Marketing (120 hours)".
- Nota media
- Do not convert it to a GPA yourself. Write "Average grade: 8.2/10", or get an official equivalence from a credential evaluation service such as WES (US and Canada) or UK ENIC (UK).
False friends and common mistakes
These literal translations are the ones that most often give away a machine-translated Spanish CV.
| Spanish | Literal mistake | On an English CV |
|---|---|---|
| Carrera (universitaria) | Career | Degree |
| Licenciado en Derecho | Licensed in Law | Law graduate / Bachelor's degree in Law |
| Actualmente / actualidad | Actually | Currently / Present |
| Prácticas | Practices | Internship |
| Becario | Scholar | Intern |
| Formación | Formation | Education / Training |
| Asistir a un curso | Assist a course | Attend a course |
| Responsable de | Responsible of | Led / Managed / Responsible for |
| Inglés: nivel alto | High level | English: C1 (CEFR) / Spanish: Native |

Spanish to English CV translation: FAQ
How do I translate my CV from Spanish to English?
Upload your Spanish CV to MyEasyCV, choose English as the CV language and a design, and the English version is ready in about a minute. Review it, remove personal details US and UK employers do not expect, and download the PDF.
Is it free?
Creating your first CV and seeing the full English result is free with an account, no card needed. The clean PDF without watermark is part of the One-Time Package (one payment; the price depends on your country) or the Pro Plan.
Is it better than Google Translate or DeepL?
A general translator converts the document as it is and can break the layout. MyEasyCV takes the content of your CV, writes it in English and lays it out again in a clean template you can edit. Either way, read the result carefully before you send it.
Is this a certified translation?
No. MyEasyCV writes your CV in English for job applications, where employers expect a normal CV. Diplomas and documents for visas, USCIS, licensing boards or other authorities need a certified translation.
CV or resume — and what is a "hoja de vida"?
Hoja de vida is the word for a CV in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. In English, "CV" is used in the UK and Europe and "resume" in the US and Canada. You can upload any of them.
Should an English resume have a photo?
For the US and the UK, usually not. In MyEasyCV the photo is optional — if you do not add one, your English CV has none.
American or British English?
Use the one of the country you apply in: American for the US (organize, center), British for the UK (organise, centre). Ask for it in the optional note and check it in the editor.
Will my university and company names be translated?
No. Names of universities, schools and companies stay in Spanish, so employers can verify them; the degree title and field are translated.
Can I translate my CV from English to Spanish?
Yes. Upload your English CV, choose Spanish as the CV language and a design. The same rule applies: the first CV is free to create and preview with an account; the clean PDF without watermark is paid.
Your experience is the same in any language. Make sure it reads well in English.
