Teacher Resume Template & CV Example

A strong teacher resume (called a CV in the UK and most of the world) fits on one or two pages and shows three things fast: your teaching license, the grades and subjects you teach, and results with numbers. Below is a complete example in a single-column, ATS-friendly design, what to write in each section, bullet points you can adapt and the keywords schools search for.

Teacher resume example

Example teacher resume in the Classic design. Every name, school and number is sample data.

How to write a teacher resume, section by section

Recruiters and principals scan a teacher CV in under a minute. Keep this order so the most important facts come first.

1. Header

Your name, the job you want (for example Elementary School Teacher, Grades 3–5), phone, e-mail and city. A photo, date of birth and marital status are not needed in the US, UK or Canada; add them only where local schools expect them.

2. Professional summary

Three or four lines: years of experience, grades or subjects, your strongest skill and one result with a number. Write it last, after the experience section is done, and match it to the job you are applying for.

3. Teaching experience

Newest job first. For each school give your title, school, city and dates, then 3–5 bullet points. Start each bullet with a verb and show the class size, the students you support and what changed because of your work.

4. Education

Your teaching degree or teacher-training program, university and graduation year. Add student teaching or school placements here if you are a new teacher.

5. License and certifications

Teaching license or qualified teacher status with the grades or subjects it covers, plus endorsements (reading, special education, ESL), first aid and safeguarding training. Schools often filter on these, so write the exact official names.

6. Skills

Six to ten skills that appear in the job ad: lesson planning, assessment, classroom management, special-needs support, the digital tools you use. Keep soft skills short and prove them in your bullet points.

7. Extras

Languages, clubs you run, coaching, committees and professional development. One line each is enough; they help when two candidates look the same on paper.

Teacher resume bullet points you can adapt

ⓘ The numbers below are illustrative sample data. Use your own real figures, even small ones.

Classroom management

  • Built a calm routine for a class of 28 students; behavior referrals fell by 40% in two semesters
  • Introduced visual schedules and a quiet corner that cut lost teaching time at transitions
  • Worked with 2 teaching aides to run small groups during every literacy lesson

Curriculum and lesson planning

  • Planned differentiated lessons in three levels for every core subject
  • Rewrote the grade 4 science unit around hands-on experiments, later adopted by 3 classes
  • Created a shared bank of 120 lesson plans and worksheets for the grade team

Student outcomes

  • Raised the share of students reading at grade level from 64% to 82% in one school year
  • Improved average math test scores by 11 points with weekly targeted practice
  • Prepared 24 students for state exams; 92% met or exceeded the standard

Parents and school community

  • Held quarterly parent-teacher conferences with 100% family attendance
  • Sent weekly learning updates through the school app to 27 families
  • Ran the after-school chess club for 18 students and 2 district tournaments

Certifications

  • State Teaching License, Grades K–6 (valid until 2029)
  • Reading Endorsement, K–12
  • CPR and First Aid certified, 2025

  • teaching license
  • lesson plans
  • classroom management
  • differentiated instruction
  • student achievement
  • assessment data
  • curriculum
  • IEP
  • ELL
  • parent communication
  • state standards
  • professional development

Variants: first-year, ESL, primary and secondary teachers

First-year or no-experience teacher

Put education and student teaching first. Describe each placement like a job: grade, class size, the units you taught and one result. Add tutoring, summer camps, coaching and volunteering with children.

ESL / English teacher

Name the certificate (TEFL, TESOL, CELTA), the age groups and levels you teach (A1–C1), class sizes and exam results such as IELTS or Cambridge passes. Mention the languages you speak and online teaching tools.

Primary (elementary) teacher

Show that you teach all core subjects, early literacy and numeracy, classroom routines and close work with parents and teaching aides.

Secondary (high school) teacher

Lead with your subject and the grades you teach, exam classes and pass rates, departments or clubs you run and the curriculum you follow.

Common teacher resume mistakes

  • Listing duties ("taught math") instead of results with numbers
  • Missing the teaching license, its grades or its expiry date
  • One generic CV for every school instead of matching the job ad
  • Two-column designs, tables and text in images that ATS software cannot read
  • Long paragraphs instead of short bullet points
  • Personal details schools do not need: full address, ID number, religion

Teacher resume FAQ

What is the best format for a teacher resume?

Reverse-chronological in a clean single-column design: header, summary, teaching experience, education, license and certifications, skills. It is easy for principals to scan and for ATS software to read.

How long should a teacher resume be?

One page for new teachers and up to two pages for experienced teachers. An academic CV for university teaching can be longer.

Is a teacher CV the same as a teacher resume?

For school teaching jobs, yes: the US and Canada say resume, the UK, Ireland, India and most other countries say CV. An academic CV for university jobs is longer and lists research and publications.

What should I write if I have no teaching experience?

Lead with your degree and student teaching, then add tutoring, camps, coaching and volunteering with children. Show what you taught, to whom and one result.

Which skills should a teacher put on a resume?

The skills in the job ad: lesson planning, classroom management, differentiation, assessment, special-needs and English-learner support, and the digital tools you use. Prove soft skills with results in your bullet points.
